SOUND MIND and MUSIC WEEK in REVIEW .7

There were many moments this week, I truly wanted to 'give up'. I mean the pressure, at times, was unbearable. When your 'livelihood' is threatened and you see yourself down thousands of dollars that must be paid, without delay, it's no time for little faith. I needed momentumental Faith and a firm belief that the Universe is over-whelmingly kind. I also was prohibited from 'begging' the usual suspects for assistance, as this wasn't a test of just finding money as much it was a test of just what I believed to be true about all that I teach and preach. In the end, the Universe did not fail me. I was shown a level of interest in the minutia of my life that hitherto I had not experienced. As always, there was a soundtrack to the evolution of my week and the healing of my heart and faith. Here's a few of those artists and tunes that got me through. Enjoy, like never before, this heavenly edition of SOUND MIND and MUSIC WEEK in REVIEW.

1. DISAPPOINTED

MICAH DALTON - Atlanta, GEORGIA

This song is from Micah Dalton's new EP release, ADVANCEMENT. He's challenged us before wtih his first indie release, "THESE ARE THE ROOTS", defying us to truly locate his style, 'tho his influences shine through like the noon day sun. He's a little Marvin Gaye and James Taylor with a dash of Bill Withers sprinkled over influences of Tommy Sims and Bob Dylan. To call him a musical mutt would be kind.., and accurate, and he wears his mystique proudly. His heritage is soul, folk and gospel, finding the common spirit in all those styles while still being able to create something altogether different than the sum of those parts. DISAPPOINTED shows us a master songwriter and storyteller that explores a broken heart in a way that's ingenious. We can apply this lyric to life and this week, I drew strength from it as I realized how much of my own life seems to pale in comparison to places I've already been, people I already met and known.., and sometimes, I'm disappointed at the ordinariness of my life, today. I've been left 'disappointed' when I've only looked at the surface of things. Go, now, and take a listen to an incredible gentle giant in this sea of unsigned sea of talent.

2. GRAVITY

SHAWN McDONALD - Seattle, WASHINGTON

Have you experience pressures that affect you like GRAVITY, pulling you away from your faith 'tho you desire to be in the center of the God's Will and yet you feel constantly out of sync and off-balance? This tune sings to that very conflict and Shawn McDonald allows us a voice through his, to say to GOD that we're doing our best.., and yet that best is lacking. I found this tune at the right moment and this artist in the nick of time. There's many songs like this, but most are written in very preachy terms that often makes one want to run in the opposite direction of the advice. He just lets us peer into his soul and in that we find the courage and strength to hold on..., another day.., another hour..., another 4 minutes and 19 seconds as we listen to a man who 'cares' about the Gravity in our lives, and offers his heartfelt insight. He's got some geniune insights in his blogs, too. Pay attention to this artist. He's one of the one's 'called' for this moment in time..., and as an added bonus, give a listen, too, to I AM NOTHING..., the lyric speaks clearly as to the reasons, why.

3. I DON'T KNOW WHY

STEVE BALSAMO - Swansea, SOUTH WALES, UK

There are some songs that you can hear, once, and they stay with you forever. I DON'T KNOW WHY is written and sang beautifully by Shawn Colvin and I've been a fan of the tune since I first heard it, but when I heard Steve Balsamo's version (complete with a guest vocal appearance by Ms. Colvin), it has literally become a song I've had to listen to weekly since I originally heard it about nine months ago as I first came on board at MySpace. Steve's having a ton of success with his group, The Storys, supporting the likes of Elton John on tour, but this song and this sentiment was more than the doctored ordered as my spirit healed this week. Sometimes, we might not totally understand all that's happening, when it's happening, but I've learned to say 'thank you' in my darkest hours for I know I'm in the presence of the Spirit of Change and in the end, whatever I lose will be worth it, in order to advance to the next level. I Don't Know Why allows you to sing away your fears as Steve so eloquently interprets this now classic tune. What a humble and talented man he is, too. You're in for a treat if this is your first introduction to his beautiful tenor.

4. CHOOSE, NEW YORK JOSHUA PAYNE -Nashville, TENNESSEE

Another beautiful tenor and friend is Joshua Payne. I cannot adequately prepare you for your first experience of this incredible instrument. I remember, however, that I was listening around the internet as I'm prone to do, clicked on him and keep working..., and in the instance I heard him for the first time, I stopped to read everything I could on him. Yes, he's that good. And having had the major contract on Verve, you might think he'd be 'removed' from barring his soul as he does in his blogs.., but he's also very real. I've learned alot from his posts and I cherish him as one of those whose music touches me as much as a simple email response. This tune is my statement to the universe after my hectic week of struggles.., I CHOOSE NEW YORK is my battle cry as this city hasn't defeated me yet! What a struggle it's been to remain here.., but I'm on a mission to build this creative vision and I'm not down, anymore... not in the slightest.

5. MORE

REDD SOUL - Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA

Just for pure inspiration, I listen to my friend, Redd Soul. He's got so much going on (about to be a father for the first time) and holding down the 9-5 while entertaining offers always to 'turn him into a star'.., while he continues to create and manage his own label and well, you get the picture. But with all of that going on, every now and then he sneeks upon me to encourage me and without knowing what was going on he posted a message to me that reminded me to 'hold on' at just the right moment. I'm blessed to have gotten this post from many as if I needed to see before my very eyes the tangible results of being an encourager to those whose paths I cross. Listen as Redd sings from his heart about love (and lovemaking) which is as close to heaven as you might can get in this realm. (But, that's a whole 'nother blog, which I'm probably no longer qualified to write about !!) His voice is strong and masculine and full of passion as he sings MORE and lyrically he reminds me to live life to it's fullest, ...to live more ...laugh more and ...love more. Now go get your groove on...

6. I LUV U

DANIEL - Hartford, CONNECTICUT

This is a new artist to me. But there's much info on his official site, http://www.thesoulofdaniel.com/ that will allow you to follow his musical journey. I'm only going to address him as a talent that deserves not only a closer look, but a deeper listen. I particuarly admire his statement in his bio that says, "I'd rather be relevant than talented, but hopefully my talent is relevant." To that end, Daniel has earned a spot in this weeks' review with I LUV U from his 2002 release, Hiphopcrisy. This tune is my praise song of the week. It's church, it's soul.., it's a little seductive and it's full of passion. I use the lyric to honor GOD and how I feel about being 'delivered' from the edge of the cliff this week. I invite you to just experience the song and use it as a template to whomever you really love, this week. Now turn it up and let it sweep you away in ever higher ecstasy.

7. LIVE OUR LIVES -

PATIENCE - Sherman Oaks, CALIFORNIA

I know this artist from the seventies although you wouldn't know just looking at that photograph that she's been in 'the business' over 30 years, now! Patience (Patti) Howard is a formidable talent whether writing, singing, producing, arranging or just being a spirtual guide.., she does it all with a measure of grace. LIVE OUR LIVES is such a fitting close to this week's journey. It encourages me to recognize that we're literally reaping what we sow at all times. So 'how we're living' directly affects our experiences as we move in and out of other's lives. A constant source of inspiration, as she, too, writes often to keep me focused and on track in this journey, her contribution to this musical week is perfectly suited lyrically for all that I've determined to do 'better' in the week's ahead. Do visit her page, listen, read and be introduced to a menagerie of artists and friends that will further enhance your musical and artistic taste. SOUND MIND and MUSIC WEEK in REVIEW .6

On the surface this week seemed to have very little highs and lows.., but my spirit has been troubled all the same. It's a different kind of restlessness, however, not the kind usually born out of depression or anxiety.., but one born out of frustration at not being able to soar as high, or run as fast, or move as distinctly as I would like when I get an idea or see a possibility or feel a new approach or concept breaking through. Thank God, I have SOUND MIND and MUSIC WEEK in REVIEW to consider, as it forces me to explore and listen with intention and often I do discover answers that were just lurking beneath the surface. It's the music that soothes me.., and reminds me to be patient and allow all things to flow as they will when left to become what they will, regardless of my perceived assistance. True, sustainable art takes the time it takes and it's always been and always will be, out of my hands to control it's creation or it's destiny. Here's a few that got me through...

1. FIVE MORE HOURS

The GABE DIXON BAND - NASHVILLE, TN

This tune by this talented artist and band reminds me to 'lighten up' and allow the forces around me to take control when I'm tired and lost. The analogy of being 'almost home' and needing your angels to help you with your 'driving' to get to that place you love is exactly the advice I needed to hear this week, and I've played this tune a few times each day to get me over me. GABE DIXON has been around for a little while, now, getting signed to Warner Bros a few years back and finding himself playing piano for Alison Krauss and Paul McCartney as he continued to 'find his sound'. Originally a five piece band, then a quartet, now a trio of piano, bass and drums, Gabe was on a mission to find the core of the music he was creating in his head. This parring down was painful.., but seemingly worth it with the release of the EP, "LIVE at WORLD CAFE" to critical acclaim, it would appear this re-incarnation is exactly the elusive sound he was so desperately seeking. 2. THINK of YOU

REEVE CARNEY - LOS ANGELES, CA

Another much sought after musician is singer/guitarist REEVE CARNEY who's out on the road most of the year with JONNY LANG. I was introduced to REEVE through one of last week's reviewees, Daniel Capellaro. I find his sound refreshing and unadorned and that simplistic approach allows you to listen as his softness draws you in to hear not only what he's saying, but how he's saying it. This tune is just a delight as it unfolds and weaves it's story in such rhythmic rhyme.

But to mention Reeve, you must also meet his brother, ZANE CARNEY, a guitar virturoso in his own right. On his page are songs he's featured on, but ROUND MIDNIGHT is just him and you'll soon see that this family has talent to spare. I'm just getting to know these talented guys so I'll just let you listen to their music and form your own opinions.

3. JENNY DON'T BE HASTY

PAOLO NUTINI - PAISLEY, SCOTLAND

So this is my 'fun song' this week.., with a great back beat. Paolo is about to blow up. And, before you dismiss him as just another pretty face, guitar boy.., please note, although he's only 19 and really does have the chops to back up the hype!! Which means some of these tunes were written when he was even younger! Signed to Atlantic Records, he drops his debut on July 17th and from the looks of things, it'll be a big deal. On his site, just to show you how adept he is as a musician and vocalist, there's a very good 'live' cover of the latest Gnarls Barkley single, CRAZY. To say he's got 'skillz' is an understatement. Despite the Italian last name, he's been in Scotland all his life and is just primed to become the next big UK import to the states. Remember you read it here, first!! 4. DISPOSITION - EP

NILS KROGH - GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN

Now for something completely different. NILS KROGH is a producer/arranger/engineer and pianist with a flare for updating jazz and all of this EP is worth a mention and can be freely sampled on his MySpace page. I promise you there's something here for everyone. The mystery of Nils is the depth of his knowledge at only 21. I'm encouraged that this music will live on and on because of artists like Nils that are truly interested in these original rhythms and rhythm masters and who also possess the skill to create new art based on that knowledge. Nils is extremely talented and worthy of special recognition for his contributions to this incredible artform.

And, also in the same neighborhood, is SWELL SESSION aka ANDREAS SAAG. I first learned of Andreas from my friends, Paul Mac Innes, Mercies May, T.B.O.I. and Ernesto... all artists of particular note and skill. I kept seeing his name on many of their singles as a producer and co-creator. Playing piano since the age of 14, he's heavily influenced by electronic artists like Brian Eno and has a serious ear for mixing styles and rhythms. He's got a serious collaboratory CD dropping this year that you can learn all about via his label site, click through his given name, above. Be sure to visit his MySpace page for samples of his work, as well.

5. HOLD ME

KIMBERLY HOLLOWAY - ATLANTA, GA/LOS ANGELES, CA

This week I met a beautiful singer songwriter that has such a solid lyrical style. Her tune, HOLD ME, is the fitting close to this rather involved week. It's a love song that allows the backing tones to do the caressing as she sings you into that perfect calm after a hard day's work. Equally at home in the lead and background, Kimberly is able to truly cast a sonic spell over her listeners, inside of any arrangement. Just go take a loooong listen to all of her tunes of which UNITY is truly a highlight and end the session with HOLD ME. She'll become an instant classic, I promise.

I have few that I really share with about what's truly happening in my life and even fewer that I can share my visions with.

I think it's dangerous to tell your 'stuff' to too many, for reasons that might seem obvious. But more often than not, my reasons for not talking more distinctly about what's really precious (or fearful) to me is not that I care about that information making the morning news. I'm so not affected by what 'other's think' about things of which they really have nothing of value to add. No, my reasons for saying less is far simplier: Most people, I've discovered over time, just can't 'believe' with you about anything that they haven't already seen or experienced. In short, they simply have little faith in their own ability to do 'a new thing' and spend the majority of their lives working for others with even lesser vision and that makes them ill-equipped to truly be an encouragement or a support to your 'flights of fancy'.

We can spend a lifetime with a safe faith borne out of the fear of change, the inability to challenge or the need for things to remain comfortable and without conflict. I'm consistently at odds with myself over these issues and it seems, on the surface, I'm never satisfied. But, what I'm 'searching' for is something beyond the norm, often, and it's kept me awake nights, wondering if it's truly within my grasp. Perhaps I'm touching a nerve now with you as you see yourselves (or others that you know) in this post.., my intention is not to 'cause you to feel like you should be 'doing more', especially if now you have those life responsibilities that require you to be present in a way that prohibits you from being too much of a visionary.

If that does represent you, and you happen to have a friend or two that are 'capable and able' to be more visionary with their lives and their choices.., the next time one of them leans on you for a little support.., justBELIEVE with them. For a moment, imagine what you might have achieved or strived to accomplish if you'd had a little more faith in your own ability to create.

Imagine a world without Edison, DaVinci or Mozart, Bill Gates.., or your visionary friend.

SOUND MIND and MUSIC's WEEK in REVIEW

So, here we go. The launch of a new blog of music reviews that are designed to keep me alert and focused on THE MUSIC and less on the troubles that go into launching a new project as overwhelming and all encompassing as the original SOUND MIND and MUSIC REVIEW. My plans are to still do at least three (possibly four) releases a year.., but in the meantime, there's so much good music that I can't possibly wait that long to tell you about artists and their songs that really deserved to be 'heard' and celebrated for their sheer beauty and note-worthiness, either in spirit or execution, but preferably, both. I'm moved by really meaningful music and I find that when I'm discovering a new artist (to me) and their songs, I feel like I'm communing with GOD and if He could only 'get my attention', this is what He would say.., what He would share. 1. UNRESTRAINED - CALVIN NOWELL

His name is Calvin Nowell. His story is absolutely heart-warming. He sings like an angel and I'm sure he might even feel like one, as he's getting to live out his life in his music like few ever get an opportunity to. Once weighing in at over 450lbs, on a 6'4" frame, complete with a 60inch waist, he says in his bio that his emotional baggage far outweighed his physical restrictions. Losing over 215lbs allows him not only the mobility to be a blessing, but the physical witness is ever before his audience as to what a strengthened inner will and a renewed faith and trust in the creator can accomplish. Listen to UNRESTRAINED and I dare you to start this week without a renewed and invigorated spirit. Calvin, you're worthy of christianing this inaugural blog with your incredible song.., and testimony. May God forever bless your gifts.

2. INDISCRIMINATE ACT of KINDNESS - FOY VANCE

Much has been written about the artistry of Foy Vance. He's been called a cross between Stevie Wonder and Richie Havens. Referred to as a gospel fueled Pearl Jam. Even called a 'giant' by Pete Townshend and at present, he's the opening act for one of my favorite vocalists, Bonnie Raitt. And, few even know he's on MySpace.. and that's the beauty of reviews like this if they serve to point out an artist that's 'accessible' for a moment in time and if you're blessed enough to hear them in such humble surroundings, please take a moment to listen and let them know how much they mean. On his EP "Birth of the Toilet Sessions Tour" (with tunes recorded all over the UK in various 'water closets' for their unique acoustics), FOY does a cover of Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean' that I promise could make the most hardened heart love MJ's music all over again. My song of the week is INDISCRIMINATE ACT of KINDNESS and trust me, I couldn't possibly prepare you for what you're about to witness. Now go listen, and come back for the rest of the list. Thank you FOY for being 'wide open' to the possibilities of the voice and being a vessel for spirit.

3. WHO YOU ARE - CRAIG LYONS

I'm out here, listening, not only for polished, undiscovered acts of varying degrees, but for the growth of an artist, as well. I've reviewed Craig a few times now and with the risk of showing some favoritism, I must draw attention to this tune that he's written about his recent travels and experiences in New York City. He's got a story to tell that not only reveals his heart but his evolution as a lyricist and musician. Remember he's playing all the instruments in his tunes as a rule, so his artistry is revealed deeper than just that of a mere singer-songwriter. Often when someone is this gifted it's difficult for them to 'find their place'. Consider that with more members in a band, certain duties can be shared, like the promotion of your music.., but when you're a literally a one man band.., well you get the point. So forgive me for once again drawing attention to what I believe is a remarkable tune, from a humble man and give a listen to WHO YOU ARE and congratulate Craig, if you will, on this achievement of spirit and song. Living alone in a lake house in Ohio, and writing in a vacuum, he would certainly 'feel' your love in a profound way.

4. THE MOMENT - YAMIT MOMO

I can remember exactly where I was when I first heard Phoebe Snow sing Poetry Man.., and you will remember the first time you hear Yamit Momo sing, too, They have similar voices and Yamit seems to be to her generation what Phoebe was to mine. I promise you. She's magical.., and mysterious and is a sheer powerhouse of a vocalist that will undoubtedly find her audience in due time. If you're lucky enough to live in London you can find her with guitarist Neil Levene, as they have been gigging regularly at venues like Monkey Chews "whilst continuing to write and develop a style of their own. Within the last year a signed songwriter, music promoters, music producers, a film maker, a graphic designer and numerous musicians have all gotten involved to create a small network surrounding Yamit, producing over 2 albums worth of material, a website, a documentary in the making. Music is, simply and sweetly, Yamit's destiny." In short, this is that moment, pay attention to your surroundings and make a mental picture of the first time you heard Yamit sing THE MOMENT. Uncovering her gift since the age of eleven.., she's finally matured into 'that voice' she had from such a young age. I wanted to 'hold out' till the next official issue.., but this week, I listened again, and I just had to 'do something' to bring added attention to someone so talented.

5. SICK n TIRED - ERNESTO

Ernesto is such an enigma. He's got so much going on, it might appear he couldn't possibly 'need' anyone to promote him but I know that in the end, regardless of his schedule, he always finds the time to write to his friends and update them on his life and his first love.., his music. Scheduled to have been a part of the debut launch of SOUND MIND and MUSIC REVIEW, his schedule was so overwhelming he wasn't able to fully participate for being truly in the trenches with this new release in it's infancy, that just recently dropped on Columbia Japan. FIND the FORM promises to take us beyond the musical landscape where A NEW BLUES seemingly left off. While on his page please listen to SICK n TIRED.., and pay attention to the other tunes, there, too, especially IF IT BE YOUR WILL (tapped for the closing tune on the original debut) and TRAFFIC featuring Mercies May. The music these Swedish artists are making is full of ingenuity and processes lyrics that are truly breathing new life in these rhythms and beats. It's a great tune and artist to close out this week's session, but just know there's much more where these came from and with a touch of encouragement, I'll be back next Sunday, with another edition of SOUND MIND and MUSIC's WEEK in REVIEW.

PAUL MAC INNES - T.B.O.I. - EP

"Well, it's about TIME!!"

I can imagine the many Paul Mac Innes fans and friends saying in concert at the recent release of his first EP. I don't know if that's a blessing or something a little less than one, 'tho. How ridiculous is it that someone with such talent and zest for life that exposes itself in his soulfilled performances, has not been seriously recorded (except through his own efforts) in a debut release before now is intriguing and part of the mystique that is Paul Mac Innes. With his writing partner, Tboi (Björn Almgren), these 'brothers of inventions' have finally given their adoring fans their due. And, it is indeed about TIME?! This tune stands alone as the reason this reviewer knows that Paul's moment of ascension is closer than we might think. His vocal prowess is so evidently unique and distinctive that with only one listen, you'll become a convert and worship all things 'Mac Innes' from then on. Don't Know Me (Buggin') is a great tune to allow you to hear his playfulness vocally and lyrically. The song warns you about rolling up on someone with an agenda, who's determined to keep things simple and straightforward. Tboi's arrangements give Paul plenty of room to discover new interpretations of his obviously well-rehearsed songs. Just hearing these tunes, again and again, you always feel like you're listening for the first time, which is the genius of the arrangements which are old-school without being 'dated'. Their fresh appeal extends to all the cuts on this EP, but I warn you, five songs will never be enough from this gifted Swede and you'll soon be scouring the CD stores for those other stand out vocals he's recorded on a few other notable artists releases. NICK FUGEDI: The Sand and The Sea:

I wouldn't called Nick Fugedi of Kalamazoo, Michigan a simple man.., but I would say his music is simple, uncomplicated and unadorned with tricks or gimmicks. It's solid songwriting and is sublime to listen to, as a musician and vocalist. He's right on the verge of something.. you sense, 'tho he seems in no hurry to get 'there'. Seems with songs like "Crossroad of Time" and "The Sand and The Sea" (title cut of latest EP) he's content to be 'right here, right now' and I would venture a guess that if you're fortunate to see him perform, he works for a room full of people the same way he would perform for a room of only a few. I like the way his songs feel.., full of honesty and straight-forward sentiment, always speaking a truth easily recognizable by anyone who's been there. Just give a listen to the mood he casts in "This Rolling Storm" and "Naked and Blind" where he sings and plays with an old soul's maturity about the pain of life and it's changes and challenges in 'Storm' and love gone wrong in the latter. On the EP are some hidden tracks that I suspect where only late additions to a stellar line-up. Special recognition needs to be paid to "She Dreams" for it's witty lyrics and tender almost mournful delivery. You can read between the lines that this tune might hold a clue as to how this artist feels about leaving his comfortable base for a larger unknown environment, but with a certainity this reviewer feels he's got nothing to worry about. He's already successful at the hardest part of being a musician.., being one of substance and unique style, one easily identifiable and that Nick has already accomplished. I'm not going to be able to be very objective. I wish I could have that professional distance and write a review that all would read, technically, and ascertain for themselves whether or not the reviewer convinces them that they should get this CD in it's entirety and listen for themselves. No, I can't write that kind of review about 'this prophetic release' from Trouble Over Tokyo. I have to be honest and tell you, that without exception, this will be one of the most talked about independent releases of 2006 from a debut artist and I don't want you to be one of the few that will wish you knew what everyone else will be raving about if you fail to heed the seriousness of this charge: PICK UP THIS RELEASE, post haste!

How I wish I had the power to make sure that this disc gets into the hands of all the musical pundits, daring them to measure it against any present or future release of an artist that's writing, producing, engineering, performing and singing all of their tunes as Toph Taylor so eloquently does. On his new label, Tokyotron Records, with partner Gareth Jordan, this debut release so aptly titled "1000" has exactly that many discs pressed in limited release for it's official debut on February 13th. After those are completely sold, there will be a more general release later in the year, at which time, if you don't know who Trouble Over Tokyo is, you'll be really upset with yourself to know that you could have been there on the ground floor supporting this admittedly reluctant, fragile, insightful, witty, insecure and frustrated artist exorcising his demons so elaborately in these incredibly intricate harmonies and sonic explorations that are full of depth and desire and longing and ...love.

I'm reluctant to single out favorites in this 10 song, 41 minutes of pure joy.

There are dance songs, moving ballads, tunes that are haunting and experimentally intricate and slightly off meter.., all intentional for the mood that Toph wishes to express. Lend Me a Light is deeply emotional and is performed with artistic modesty and understated flare and Monster reveals this artists' bouts with his inner demons and will allow others to 'see' his heart in his smile, beyond the shallowness that often passes for acceptance. Is He Alive will be his signature tune for years to come, allowing you to witness the genius of Toph in the infectious beat, backing harmonies and spirited lyrics. A close second to that signature title might be No Handed, done twice in this release, with the latter one revealing Toph unplugged with just piano and backing vocals, singing from the depths of his soul.

The title cut is the most involved lyrically and it's dramatic meaning is sure to have others discussing it's poignancy into the wee hours of the morning. Notice especially how this tunes 'ends' ...it's simply genius in it's execution.

The Boy stands out in it's autobiographical subtlety and is performed possibly as the most sensitive of the ten tracks. Do we need to ask, who 'the boy' is? It seems important to this artist to retain his naivete while exposing a maturity of understanding of his brave new world. I'm proud that someone has the courage of their convictions, especially at the recording age of 25, to write honestly about his world, his fears, his doubts, his loves... and expose it all to the world at large, unabashedly. To describe Toph's voice in terms of comparisons doesn't do it justice. His bio reads "if you threw Bjork and Michael Jackson in a blender, you'd pretty much be there.., only with less blood", is that ToT self-effacing humor at it's zenith. He's a tenor and then some, with pop-soul sensibilities but honestly there's not quite a voice like his in contemporary music. At least not one that has as much control as Toph does of his. It's other-worldly at times, just like his musical arrangements. You'll be mesmerized as you listen to him soar in that borderless falsetto. Remember, all the voicings you hear belong to this distinctive artist.

I highly recommend you listen, honestly and purposely, to this entire release that is as creative musically as it is lyrically and vocally and anyone would be hard press to say at which it is most successful. ~~BD of www.EdenDustMedia.com

HOW CAN I TELL YOU...

Perhaps it's been the interpersonal relationships that are always challenged in the holiday season.., but I see many hurting and being hurt in places where they should feel safe. Let's face it, there are those, in our lives, that say they love us, but their love HURTS. Makes us feel badly, makes us cry, doubt ourselves and worse, believe the lie that 'this is love'.
And, sometimes, the one doing the hurting.., is 'us'.

How Can I Tell You... about that time in my life when I was less than the man, brother, father, son that I was designed to be? I wrote this tune mainly for my daughter of whom I was estranged from at the time.

The musician-engineer-producer, Edwin Ramos, was also going through a divorce and a seperation from his daughter. I think that informs the lyric and musical spirit of this song.It's not certain if either daughter ever heard the tune in it's completion, but I don't think we wrote it with that result in mind. We had to say these things, in order to be 'free' and without this confession, could we ever really 'move on' and forgive ourselves??

This is another taste of my evolution and it's uploaded to encourage those of you on this list that are hurting.., and might know of another that has gone through a similar pain.., to listen, and be healed from that defeatist attitude. BE CERTAIN that there are more artists and songs that influenced me in 2005. But these artists stand out for very personal reasons. If I attempted to list all the 'songs' that influenced me, this list would be too long and much to much to bear. Besides, the songs are only an extension of the artist. I care about the creator of these tunes far more than their creations.

So, this is my TOP 25 ARTISTS in 2005.

There are multiple songs from the artists that are listed in not so subliminal messages to them. I listed first the one song that influenced me most or introduced me to them, and sometimes, admittedly, it's not the best song that artist might be known for.., but the one that spoke to me most.

Some of the tunes I listed are on the artist's CD, not MySpace. To hear them, support the artist by purchasing their music.

Have a PEACEful New Year, folks. Support the music you love by sharing the gift of that support with the artist in word and deed. Trust me, 'they need to know they are being effective and that won't happen if you don't tell them'.

MY ARTIST FRIENDS: special edition

One of my favorite biblical stories is found in the Book of Acts. Peter and John, disciples to Jesus, who had just been crucified, are hanging around Jerusalem per Jesus final instructions before his death, to 'wait for what the Father has promised', namely the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Upon receiving that baptism in the form of tongues as fire, Peter preached a prophetic sermon in Chapter Two that basically foretold these days in which we now live.

17 'In the last days, God said, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit upon all my servants, men and women alike, and they will prophesy. 19 And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below - blood and fire and clouds of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon will turn bloodred, before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives. 21 And anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.."

Peter would go on to preach with such fervor that, according to verse 43, A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together constantly and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their possessions and shared the proceeds with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord's Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity - 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved.

Now understand this turn of events when Peter and John passed by the lame beggar at the gate of Beautiful. This man who was born lame, was carried to this temple entrance on a daily basis to beg for alms from those that entered to worship. Chapter 3:3 -

When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money. 4 Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, "Look at us!" 5 The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting a gift. 6 Then Peter said, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." 7 Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man's feet and anklebones were healed and strengthened. 8 He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them.

ERNESTO: A New Blues

SILVER OR GOLD, I DO NOT HAVE.., but such as I have give I Jonatan Terris Bäckelie aka ERNESTO. This CD, A NEW BLUES, is an important release for these troubled times. It blends soul, blues, gospel and dance in a hybrid of emotional releases that will take the attentive listener to heights indicative of the experience of those that waited in the Upper Room on the Day of Pentecost. Hearing the depth of lyrical integrity and hypnotic musicality, you'll be overwhelmed that all of this has birthed forth from a mere 24 year old from Sweden! Jonatan's roots are indeed in the church, but his understanding of meter and rhyme suggests that he's traveled beyond his foundation to other depths to achieve this musical feat. You'll be drawn to the magnificent gospel-tinged anthem DEVIL's GOTTA RUN and the swirling implusive FALLING FROM GRACE for their sheer rhythms but I plead with you to truly listen to the lyrics. The same goes with FATHER: this is introspective songwriting at it's best. NO MORE (Oh Child) mixtures electronica rave induced beats with down home blues, a combination that is genius in it's execution. Other stand out favorites are SOCIALIST featuring the incredible vocalese of fellow countryman, Paul Mac Innes (another anointed talent) filled with enough political fire power to end every war before it begins, if only it were required listening at the diplomatic levels.., and the wickedly lyric-driven BLAME IT ON YOUR MELODY gives you insight that this artist is just dealing with his everyday problems, in the midst of being on the cutting edge of a new musical expession. But special mention must go to the confessional IF IT BE YOUR WILL that will open your soul to the inifinite possibilities of a life lived without ego.

This release is better than silver or gold.., it's living water that I promise is as important to your musical collection as it will be to your soul, if you let the music wash over you as it certainly will, and if you would just let go and join in the holy dance. Exceptional Records has a bona fide cult hit on it's shelves. A NEW BLUES is nothing short of a clarion call of encouragement and hope born out of the releasing of these truths revealed so adeptly by Ernesto. BEN TAYLOR: Another Run Around the Sun

How easy it would be to just sit in the shadow of someone 'famous' especially if you're born into that shadow. Lesser talented individuals who by nature of their birth are given rites of passages all the time. But Ben Taylor, fortunate son of legendary James Taylor and Carly Simon, wasn't content to be part of his parents' legacy by proxy, but by intention. This new release will undoubtedly place the young Taylor along side his birthright as a formidable talent in his own right.

Upon the first immediate listen to Another Run Around the Sun, you're struck with the similarity in Ben's sound to that of his father and it can be disarming to the point that you could become somewhat dismissive of what seems like imitation. But if you're going to compare him to his father on any level.., please note that it's really the songwriting that is most reflective of the senior Taylor. This is the genius of the legacy that has been so obviously passed on to Ben and it's the strength of this release that showcases his writing (and singing) most effectively. From the opening confession, "Nothing I Can Do" that Ben sings with incredible tenderness and revelation, to the closing haunting manifesto, "Love", every song in between reveals more and more that this Taylor is not only his own man, but certainly has his own voice. This CD is a labor of love as it just feels good, sounds good and is performed with a simplicity that other artists with 'more resources' could learn a lesson or two from. Ben's less is more approach allows the listener to 'hear' the lyrics that are the undeniable star of each tune. He sings 'just enough' to support these fine crafted songs and never overshadows with unnecessary production just because he can. Stand outs for this reviewer, "I'll Be Fine", "You Must Have Fallen" and "One Man Day", each tune substains and enhances the legacy that Ben Taylor seems to have not only reconciled, but embraced wholeheartedly. As a side note, he's supported by incredible talent featuring actor/musician Kevin Bacon in production and on bass, David Saw and Beulah of the UK on supporting vocals and a host of notable session players that lend their considerable gifts to one fine release for a most desiring artists. ~~BD


MAGNUS ELIASSEN: Second Grace

This is another Norway import and like his fellow countryman, Even Johansen (Magnet), Magnus Eliassen is a force to be reckoned with. His imprint is all over these productions that are at times sparse, and other times full of life and energy. From playing most of the instruments to the stellar productions and vocals, Magnus allows the listener to peer into his soul as he sings about love and redemption seemingly for the pure joy of it. Each tune on Second Grace is a tour de force of kinetic creativity. To say there's really nothing like it in the marketplace is an understatement. Even with the aforementioned comparison, it's evident from the almost subliminal opening tune, "The Meaning of Life", there's an assertiveness to how Magnus lays out his mission statement for this release. "There's so much I want to say to you", he sings in the opening verse as if he's aware of and speaking to each and every heart that's listening. In this tune, he continues to explain that being given the 'grace of a call', he confesses that his reasons for what he's doing in this release is beyond mere showmanship.., beyond the vanity that motivates most.

You'll be drawn to "Lois is Happy" for it's infectious rhythms, but pay attention to the lyric and learn the much deeper reasons why Lois is happy! "Falling in Love" is an epic hit, but unlike it's version on MySpace, the CD cut is much fuller and more more involved. With several 'false endings', each new level brings a new surprise for the listener. For this reviewer's taste, you can't beat "Weakness" for it's sheer musicality. From the backing vocals and the lead sung in the pocket like a snare hit, Magnus shows his versatility as a writer and vocalist that is just as commerical as anyone on the charts while still maintaining his uniqueness without compromise. He closes this release with "Until We Meet Again", which does, as the opening tune, establish his connection to his audience as he promises to 'return' with even more where this came from. "You'll be welcomed to take my hand" he shares as he knowingly takes the leader's role into a beautiful world of sound and love, "If I don't break or bend, one day we'll meet again".

This is an artist that shouldn't be hard to find in the years to come. This is nothing short of a masterpiece and with all that it has going for it, should allow Magnus Eliassen a much deserving audience and platorm in the very near future. In the meantime, check him out on MySpace and please purchase this disc and see if you too agree, that this is one of 'those' CD's that you'll remember exactly where you were when you first heard it. It's really THAT good. ~~BD

DAVID SAW: Different Story

David Saw is songwriter.., who just so happens to also be a great instrumentalist and vocalist. But it's his turn of a lyric, his quick wit and his dry delivery of very poignant moments that gives him his signature. I dare make the comparison to another daunting talent that I believe you as a listener will immediately understand when you delve into Different Story. There's a Dylan quality to what David is doing here. Yes, Bob Dylan. On "Big Deal", David establishes himself amongst his peers with a lyric that so 'in your face' that it's hard to comprehend how he manages to sing it and still 'cause you to sympathize with his point of view. It's how he writes, ...plain and simple. Saying those things that others 'think' in the heads and hearts, but dare not say outloud. David sings them for us and gives us our voices in the meantime. "Love after Wine" is a genius of a lyric that celebrates the delicate balance of love with a delicious give and take between a man and women, with guest vocalist, Cathy Burton. The title cut is the most Dylanesque with it's hammond organ and reveals how David just calls it like it is, as he exposes unrequitted love in all it's vanity. My favorite cut is "For This Night" as it includes the best of all that David does as a songwriter. He tells the story of a break up and the endless parade of those that will never be the one that 'got away' no matter how much time you spend with them. It's sheer skill that he writes so simply and poignantly in one stroke of pen to paper. Another tune that deserves a special listen, "Love Inside Me", shows how it's not just what you say, but how you say it, as a songwriter. When he sings, "I watch a movie, I fell asleep, Then daylight woke me, I still felt weak", he conveys with the slightest inflection of his voice how a lost love lingers and truly feels. David Saw is a songwriter and this is not only evident in this release but celebrated by the likes of other stellar fans of his music, namely his buddy, Ben Taylor and Ben's mother, Carly Simon. Both are fans of his writing and often perform his tunes in concert. Remember the name, the next time you happen upon a tune that lingers in your head.., it could very easily be a David Saw lyric. ~~BD

There's a music explosion going on. You won't read about in the news or even hear about it on TV. There'll be nothing, then one day, you'll ask yourself, where did all this great talent come from.., and without hestitation, your inner spirit will tell you, "The U.K." ...and MySpace.

I spent a little time online back in the day with the wave of indie music that became MP3.com when very few knew or understood this whole digital world of music uploading, let alone, downloading. Today, it feels like we've always had this method of distribution. It's made it far easier to discover new talent. Talent that might never get to travel to half the places they are streamed with today's technology. MySpace has become the new 'hub' on the web for musicians. Think of it as a hip corner cafe with the coolest musicians and people, on the same corner in every city and town, at the same time and you'll get an idea just how important it is to be one of those artists in the nightly line up. At the top of my set list is MANDALA, an eclectic ensemble lead my vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Neil Marsh and Francis Booth of London who have been the driving force behind Mandala since its formation in 1997. Neil, who luxuriates in the recordings of David Sylvian and Jeff Buckley, handles the songwriting, guitars and vocals, while Francis, who’s iPod is as home to obscure Bjork recordings as it is the bittersweet tones of Nick Drake, handles the bass and electronics.

IVAN COLON: Room Enough

There's really no such thing as undiscovered talent. Unrecognized? Yes. Unappreciated? Certainly. Undiscovered? No. Case in point, Ivan Colon. He's certainly discovered himself, his faith and his voice in a sea of influences and opportunities to have success by any means necessary, along comes a genuinely 'nice' man, with a humble spirit who is writing songs about love and faith that are just plain refreshing. The whole listen through to this release "Room Enough", I just keep feeling a sense of 'Light'. There really is no darkness, here. You will feel better for just listening to his stylings and reading his lyrics (included) as he's singing. He's a painter of images and he's really good at it. Think James Taylor at the beginning of his career, then imagine the tonality of Michael Franks and Kenny Rankin and you'll understand a little of what you're about to experience, listening to Ivan. The difference, however, is how unabashedly he sings about his faith. This isn't one of those contemporary Christian CD's that seem to serve up the least of their skills as homage to the Most High. This is songwriting at it's best with lyrics that are witty, full of promise and hope, and purposeful. My stand out favorites are Holy Father, With You and I Soon Shall See. This is not to imply the others aren't good in their own right. Everyone will speak to you at various times, I'm sure, but these three, for me, really are a cut above. Perhaps it's just this reviewer's bias, but get the CD and pick your favorite three and let's see if we agree!! ~~BD


CRAIG LYONS: Equilibrium Theory - vols. I & II

Here's my opening confession: I suspect Craig Lyons might need a review the least. He's got it all, by the standards that most judge success. He's placed tunes on MTV's Real World and he's in the studio, now, working on a new project that's possibly going to take him from his humble place on MySpace and other music sites, to the hollowed halls of promotion akin to the machinery that's behind artists like John Mayer and Ben Folds. So, with that said, you should really get over to MySpace, listen to him, and get this soon to be collector's CD from his indie label, www.GrayScaleRecords.com Here's the genius that's Craig: on this release with the exception of a baritone guitar on one tune, everything (and I mean everything) else is Craig! Yes, he plays bass, drums, guitar, piano and sings all the vocals. ALL Craig!! Many might think, what a control freak! But, the truth be told, it allows him to fully flesh out his musical ideas. Something most artists never get to fully experience and even fewer can really appreciate. His songwriting is on par with an artist about to break through and become quotable from his radio friendly tunes that are a throw back to that west coast vibe associated with Kenny Loggins or Dan Fogelberg. Like the latter comparison, Craig is also from the mid-west 'tho it's obvious his musical expertise and roots have caused him to sound like a seasoned veteran while still officially being a twenty-something artist. You'll fall in love with Easy and Tranquility and be amazed at the musicianship of Dreaming World and Psychopath, but for this reviewer, he saved the best for last. Closing this musical collage is an intense tune called The Wild that really allows you to hear the gift that just keeps on giving. His guitar work, rhythm and vocal harmonies, makes you forget he's a one man band. You can't help but look up and check the liner notes to be sure he's not fronting an established band. In short, this is an incredible sophomore release from a young artist that wasn't discovered 'till after this recording. Don't be guilty of waiting 'till his major release to know what you can know now: Craig Lyons is the real deal and deserves every good fortune that's about to come his way. ~~BD


EVEN JOHANSEN: MAGNET-On Your Side

Bergen, Norway had a secret that's no longer. His name is Even Johansen and he's known professionally as MAGNET, an eclectic folk-electronica artist that sings melancholic, ethereal tunes that one often associates with female artists like Bjork or Imogene Heap. He's got such a unique grasp of the subliminal that you'll find yourselves lost on more than one occasion in his soundscapes and haunting lyrics. He's really got his own unique way of phrasing and structuring his tunes that are all written and produced by him, with the exception of one cover, Bob Dylan's, Lay Lady Lay. That tune has been Magnetized into something beyond it's original in the hands of Even and it's a delight to hear new life from such an established tune. The layers upon layers painstakingly produced to flawless perfection seem to be a hallmark of Magnet. This debut release under this moniker allows Even to really let go and discover what truly must have taken him years to uncover. You can learn more about him on MySpace and be directed from there to his official home, www.homeofmagnet.com where you'll soon discover what the rest of the free world already knows. This is one uniquely gifted artist and we're the lucky ones who get to hear him, once we've found him, on a regular basis. The title cut, On Your Side, is a good place to start, but the Last Days of Summer will really make you happy. Then there's the tune that sounds like it came out of an old Hollywood musical, The Day We Left Town, with the most wicked background vocals I've heard since I first discovered Bjork. This is not a comparison that should go unchecked, he's that good and certainly is warrants that comparison. And, then some. But, Even finds his own persona in tunes likes Nothing Hurts Now and Overjoyed. Both showcase his incredible lyric writing and sensitive vocal delivery that just pulls you into his very soul. Quick, go experience Magnet and become an instant fan. ~~BD

WALKING ASLEEP

Haven't you felt like you've been jarred awake out of a deep slumber with these natural (man-made?) disasters and mind altering, awe inspiring events of late? Oriah Mountain Dreamer wrote about these present and future events several years back in her book "The Call".

Here's one of my favorite passages:

Walking Asleep
Walking asleep, moving in the world disconnected from our essential core, can be dangerous; it means our choices are based not on an accurate picture of what is, but on what we want or fear is true. At best, actions based on an inaccurate picture of what is are unlikely to succeed in creating the change we desire.

At worst, they will create greater suffering.
There are a thousand ways to go to sleep, to walk through our lives unaware of and unable to be with what is and so unconscious of what and who we are. Beyond the obvious choices to move away from what is by using a variety of substances --food, alcohol, nicotine, drugs, caffeine--the culturally preferred way of making sure we don't wake up is to keep ourselves perpetually exhausted with constant activity, endless work, and the consumption of overwhelming amounts of information: to do continually. And even when some of us reject the quest for more material wealth or social status, we do not necessarily break the pattern but turn instead to the pursuit of spiritual development. Either way, we are in constant motion internally or externally. We are rarely still.

We seldom find silence. We do not rest. And tired people do not want to wake up, don't have the energy to wake up, can't even fathom it as a possibility.
We will never be deeply happy or tuly able to live and love fully until we find our way of living from an awareness of the deep stillness at the center of what we are. It is not so much that what we are at the deepest level wants to wake up, to be aware, to love, to create peace and truth and beauty, but that our essential nature is wakefulness, awareness, love, peace, truth and beauty. To hear The Call we only need to listen. But sometimes we can listen only when our illusions of control and safety have been shattered, when we are lying on the ground --figuratively or literally in the wildnerness-- weeping and ready to say, as RUMI wrote:

I didn't come here of my own accord.
Whoever brought me here will have to come and take me home.
